How to Find a Marketing Agency

If you Google “Marketing Agency” you will receive 1.59 million results. With a seemingly endless list of agencies to choose from, where do you even begin? After being through the process on both the client and agency side, here’s my recommendation on how to find an agency that is right for you:

  • Establish Your (Laundry) Wish List

Once you have fully thought through and written down everything you are looking for in an agency partnership, prioritize the list. It is extremely important to have these items in writing at the beginning of this process. This document will not only serve as the piece that will help create - and narrow - the list of agencies, but will become your reference guide, and ultimately help you make the final decision.

  • Perform your Due Diligence

This will be the most time intensive - and critical - step in the process. Using your prioritized list as the initial basis of criteria, start your search. Look at creative portfolios, agency size, reviews, and industry experience. Create list a of agencies you’d like to consideration, and, utilizing your prioritized list, narrow the list of agencies.

  • Create an Agency “Scorecard”

Again referencing your pre-established, prioritized list of criteria, establish an agency “scorecard.” This should include a specific set of questions for each of the agencies you decide to meet with. Use it to ask each of the agencies the same questions so that you can easily tell how they measure up against each other.

  • Meet the Agencies

Based upon your criteria, and the amount of time you can dedicate to meeting with the agencies, select a handful of agencies to bring in for a meet and greet. If you have any specific projects you are looking for help with, brief each of the agencies prior to the meeting so that they are prepared to address how they would approach these particular projects.

After meeting with the agencies and reviewing your scorecard notes, you should be equipped to make a selection.
